CONSULTING EXPERIENCE

Consultant, The British Columbia & Aotearoa Indigenous Student Mobility Programme
   January 2019 - July 2019 | The University of Auckland
  • Created and led the British Columbia and Aotearoa Indigenous Student Mobility Programme, a 2-year project providing reciprocal, short-term learning abroad, professional development and networking opportunities for Indigenous students in Canada and Aotearoa (New Zealand). 

​Consultant, Global Youth Advancement Network
   October 2018 - June 2019 | Michigan State University
  • Developed web content and the call for proposal for the Global Youth Advancement Summit which brought together 120 youth delegates from 38 countries to address and develop solutions to Global Inequities across five cross-cutting themes: education, healthcare, the environment, art and culture, and livelihoods; summary of activities here. 
  • Led the proposal review and delegate selection process, and the Entrepreneurship Competition, coached and mentored entrepreneurs, provided leadership on logistics management, and developed a robust faculty mentor program.
 
 Consultant, The Alliance for African Partnership
   November 2017 – February 2018 | Michigan State University
  • Facilitated a strategic planning process for a $23M, 5-year initiative that seeks to transform lives in Africa by promoting innovative, sustainable, and equitable long-term partnerships to address mutually defined challenges across six priority areas: agricultural food systems, education, culture, health and nutrition, youth empowerment, and water, energy and the environment.
  • Participated in key meetings with Vice Chancellors from African universities and co-facilitated a 2-day planning retreat, resulting in a detailed implementation plan.​

 Consultant, Diversity Abroad
   October 2016–June 2018
  • Worked with industry leaders to create the curriculum for 32+ new eLearning short courses  to provide professionals with insight and practical tools to support and advance inclusive excellence in global education.
  • Led the Global Institute for Inclusive Leadership - an intensive, 8-day interactive workshop designed for professionals who were interested in gaining skills and building networks to better support their global education and diversity-related work.
  • Co-led the Faculty Development Task Force, resulting in a publication “Matrix for Self-Care and Creating Brave Spaces as Education Abroad Program Directors” , a “Embracing Brave Spaces” video, and a 120-minutes workshop.
  • Managed and led the 2nd and 3rd annual Minority Serving Institution (MSI) Global Education Summit designed to enhance the institutional capacity of MSIs to integrate international education efforts into their campus climate.
  • Designed and led the 1st and 2nd annual Innovation Competition at the Diversity Abroad Conference bringing together professionals and students with creative and outstanding ideas and programs that advance diversity and inclusive excellence in global education.
  • Collaborated with and advised a group of master’s students towards the development of a national climate survey to understand the experiences of under-served students in education abroad.
  • Created an innovative one-year, Fellowship Program for Graduate Students & New Professionals who were interested in exploring careers in diversity and inclusion in global education, resulting in four new positions for the organization.

Consultant, Youth Empowerment Programs

  • Facilitated a joint strategic planning process for two key initiatives – the Youth Empowerment Program and the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, which included team building activities, a 2-day strategic planning retreat and work plan development.

Consultant, Academic Internship Council
   June 2013–present
  • Provide strategic leadership for the Global Internship Conference (i.e., developed the inaugural research track and poster community, and serving on the content committee).
  • Created the online proceedings: Dublin 2015, Boston 2016, Santiago 2017, and Detroit 2018.

Consultant, The MasterCard Foundation
April 2015–September 2015 
  • Co-planned and co-led the Secondary Education Scholars Convening which offered academically talented yet economically disadvantaged youth in the Scholars Program from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda to find their leadership voice, develop community give back goals, explore career understandings, and create high-value relationships with other youth from across the Continent. A summary of findings and final report was submitted to the Foundation.
  • Led the Foundation’s Request for Proposal process to expand and deepen the outcomes of The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program; worked collaboratively with the Education and Learning work group to develop eligibility and selection criteria for the call for proposals, created the scoring rubric, and co-created a process with the Deputy Director to facilitate decisions that resulted in new partnerships, the renewal of existing partner universities, and a learning brief.
  • Co-authored the paper "Priorities and Strategies for African Higher Education" resulting in an exploration of continued program development, thought leadership, and investments in the space.

Consultant, The MasterCard Foundation

  • Provided the Foundation and its partner universities and organizations with a ‘landscape scan’ of student internships at the secondary and tertiary level. Due to propriety rights, some areas of the report have been masked to maintain confidentiality.

  • Designed, conducted, and monitored organization-wide assessment and evaluation projects, resulting in a formal report.
  • Trained 35+ volunteers for effective cross-border, service learning, and community-based experiences in South Africa.

National Co-Chair, Diversity Committee, Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

  • Led a team of 12 professionals, providing strategic leadership that supports inclusive excellence in faculty and organizational development.
  • Coordinated the international grants application processes for the Donald H. Wulff Diversity Fellowships ($13,000) and the Educational Development Internship Grant ($10,400).

  • Led a team of 20 national representatives, serving 5000 student affairs administrators and higher education professionals toward advocacy and inclusion of LGBTQQIA issues in higher education.

  • Co-conducted a policy analysis about family-responsive environments for STEM faculty in higher education, resulting in the Gender Values Institutional Policy Matrix. The project was funded by the National Science Foundation.

  • Contributed to the collection and analyses of data to better understand how international higher education has shaped the career and life trajectories of past African graduates (1940s to present). The study was funded by The MasterCard Foundation. 

Research & Scholarship Associate, Office of Study Abroad

  • Contributed to the design of a research study about, and conducted data extraction of, student participation in Freshman Seminars Abroad from the program’s inaugural inception in 2003 through 2013.
  • Conducted a review of historical artifacts and documents about MSU’s innovations and the history of education abroad between the periods 1910 to 2014, as well as held interviews with past executive directors to learn about their strategic priorities, initiatives, and achievements, resulting in a webpage to showcase the study’s findings.
  •  Conceptualized, developed, and implemented the first and second Annual Learning Abroad Conferences in collaboration with the Faculty Learning Community on Teaching and Learning Abroad and the Office for International Students & Scholars, resulting in a webpage that features student stories. 

Principal Investigator, Dissertation Research

  • Conducted a study that examined the factors shaping the careers of 28 black women academics in post-apartheid South Africa, resulting in a published PhD thesis: Domains of Influence on Academics’ Careers: Narratives from Black/African, Colored, and Indian Women Academics in Post-Apartheid South Africa. Funded by the Michigan State University’s College of Education Dissertation Completion Fellowship ($6,000) and the Graduate School’s Research Enhancement Grant ($1,000).

  • Examined the lives of 24 Indian South African female academics in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Funded by the Michigan State University’s College of Education Summer Research Fellowship ($6,000) and the Center for Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education ($2,000).

  • Created the curriculum for an immersive 8-day leadership institute for US-based higher education professionals interested in developing individual diversity and inclusion action plans for their respective universities. This included opportunities for guided self-reflection, a series of workshops, excursions to cultural and historical sites, as well as deep engagement with local scholars, senior administrators at the University of Auckland, young leaders, and activists from the Māori and Pacific Island communities.
